SXSW 09' Recap! (Boy-Cott Magazine's Experience) by: Black Mamba & Kwestro

DAY 1 (Thursday, March 19th, 2009)

Kwestro and I arrive at 9:30p.m. and the first show we catch was the Rhymesayers show at Habana Bar and man is it PACKED! The first group up to bat was " I Self Divine "and they SHUT-IT-DOWN! I never heard of these kats before and that was the beauty of it! I Self Divine had the crowd in a FRENZY and they were the opening act. Next up was my homie Abstract Rude and it's always a pleasure to kick it with him. Ab played a lot of joints off his upcoming album and even brought out Myka 9 rock with him. He had that nice chill west coast vibe throughout his set, so you best believe that a lot of weed was smoked:::::

Unfortunately, Kwest and I didn't stay for the whole Rhymsayers show, but we connected with Brother Ali. So keep ya' eyes pealed for a possible interview with him. The next order of business was the "Now On" / Mayer Hawthorne and the County Show sponsored by V-Tech and it took place at the Pure Volume lounge. This is the show Kwest and I we're very ecstatic about, too bad their sets we cut short due to unorganized venue owners. On a positive note, Monster and V-Tech sponsored the event so there was free DRANKS for EVERYONE!! WOO HOO!! Now On went on first and most defintely made the best of their short set by rocking it like it was their last day on earth! However, Mayer Hawthorne and the County stole the show fo' sho, it's just something about that throwback 50's sound they have that drives people bonkers.

As Kwest and I were about to end our night we stumbled across this dope hip-hop and R & B duo. The group consisted of two females and they we're very talented. I have no clue where they were from, or who they were, but their music was so on point. Check out the video and pics below.

Day 2 ( Friday, March 21st, 2009)

Friday was decent... Kwest and I checked out Tanya Morgan, Crew 54 & Mickey Factz, but we missed Mickey Factz because we needed a change of pace, and by that I mean some DJ SETS! I love performances to death but a brotha' needs to get his party on to! NAH MEAN??!!!?? So after seeing Crew 54 kill it as usual we headed over to The Lodge to catch the No Request DJ Show and it was just what Kwest and I needed. DRANKS-DANCING-GIRLS and...MO' DRANKS!

p.s. Be sure and Check out Crew 54's new Mixtape called Crew Deep.

Day 3 ( Saturday, March 21st, 2009)

Saturday was the best day of the festival for us. The first show we checked out was The Frank 151 & OkayPlayer showcase. On our way towards the door we noticed that there was a Freestyle Cipher going on. Check it:

Shortly after the Cipher we made our way inside to check out the showcases. The highlights were 88-Keys who has a song about "morning wood" & a burning bush, Izza Kizza who brought the best stage show and Res who is a wonderful neo-soul singer. After all the performances Kwest and I made our way upstairs to the roof party! So nutz!!! It seriously felt like an exotic get away, and to top it off DJ JayCeeOh was spinnning! I was losing my mind watching him kill it on the one's and two's! So Good:::

Cheers Fam!
